Character Number: First

Character: Kaworu Nagisa (a.k.a. the 12th angel Tabris)
Source: Neon Genesis Evangelion (manga ver.)
Appearance: Kaworu is average height and skinny as a rail. He has short, light (silver) colored hair and red eyes which set him apart as someone not quite human in his world.
History: http://evangelion.wikia.com/wiki/Kaworu_Nagisa (Please only check the manga section)
Timeline: Chapter 74, following his death

Personality: My friends and I jokingly refer to the manga version of Kaworu as "feral Kaworu." The manga author felt that his character should be more like a child, and that really shows. In stark contrast to his TV and movie versions, Kaworu's existence in the manga has consisted almost entirely of being raised in a tube, and so he acts as one would expect someone with that background to act: poorly socialized with a deep lack of understanding about what it means to have human bonds and emotions. He tells those at SEELE who oversee him that he finds these things fascinating, but it’s very plainly evident that they do nothing but confuse him as well. He’s very aggressively frank in his curiosity and won’t hesitate to interrogate someone if he doesn't understand their feelings or actions. This goes on for a majority of his time in the canon.

He also does not get that awkward moments and awkward locations (such as in the girls’ bathroom, the first and last place he meets Asuka, or the showers) are not the place for philosophical conversations, literally because he has never experienced such things and thus has no sense of shame or awkwardness. Well, that's not entirely true. After he "fixes" Shinji’s hyperventilation by kissing him, he flushes with a great deal of embarrassment from not really being able to process what just happened and why it's making him feel a certain way.

Love is another thing he doesn't understand, and the concept of it both disgusts and intrigues him. When he has the feeling of “love” identified to him, it’s through Rei’s death and Angelic interference which causes her feelings to leak into Kaworu. He calls the feeling “sticky and tepid” and yet in nearly the same breath wishes to see what it would be like to be loved by Shinji and maybe even to love him in return. From this point on, he seems even more determined to get close to Shinji, even though earlier in the story, he was prodding at Shinji for always grasping and clinging at others.

There are times where he seems to know what’s going on, but there’s a big difference between being privy to certain knowledge and life experience. When he does know what’s going on (in matters regarding Angels, since he is one, or the inner workings of SEELE and NERV, which is all privy knowledge), he can actually be a little insufferable since he tends to act like such things are obvious. He is also totally self-assured during battle, due to what one can assume are super-human reflexes.

However, underneath all of that, there is an odd sense of compassion and mercy that remains consistent with his character across all canons, including the manga. Despite treating Shinji as his personal interrogation subject, he does actually show him some sympathy. He has him stay in his room following Rei’s death because Shinji is too afraid to be around others, and even lets him sleep in his bed and gives him his own pillow (even though the other pillow’s right there on the floor). This even shows when he kills a starving kitten that he and Shinji meet over early on. After killing it, he explains that the kitten’s death was inevitable anyway, so a quick death was a better alternative, and though he doesn't say it outright until his last moments, this is what he wishes for himself as well. He isn't so much resigned to his fate as he knows that, due to the circumstances of his background and existence, he cannot escape it. He has decided that the one act of rebellion he can get away with is choosing the manner of his own death, that is, falling to Shinji preventing him from initiating the Third Impact. In this case, his death is not really at all one of self-sacrifice (as it would be considered in other canons), and actually comes to carry a level of selfishness after he tells Shinji to kill him so that there's no way he would be able to forget him even after he's gone.

(As a side-note, one of his dumb quirks is that he seems to enjoy filling in his gaps in "lilim" knowledge by reading magazines and watching TV. Any weird human things fascinate him to a sickening degree.)

Abilities: Kaworu is shown to be very athletic and skilled in combat. Due to the fact that he isn't quite human, he also carries innate ESP powers such as the ability to levitate and manipulate objects (as well as himself). He will probably try to hide these things in an attempt to keep himself off the radar. He also has musical talent (i.e. being able to play a song perfectly after only hearing it once) though he doesn't seem to understand where this comes from or place any value on it.

Inventory: He'll arrive there with nothing but the clothes on his back, since that's all he left his previous world with.

Prose Sample:

There are too many useless books in the library. So many of them are filled with lilim patting themselves on the back for being able to explain basic scientific facts or being proud of their past accomplishments. He doesn't understand any of it. Kaworu tosses another one aside and rises from a crouch, wondering if there's anyone he can talk to to find what he wants. At a desk nearby, he spots a girl staring at him, book before her, perhaps made aware of his presence by the sound of books being tossed. He shrugs and shoves his hands into his pockets and approaches her, speaking up as he reaches the desk.

"Hey, can you tell me where to find something more interesting to read?"

The girl's eyes get bigger in what he realizes is irritation, though he doesn't understand why. She lifts a hand to her mouth and puts a finger to her lips, shushing him curtly.

He blinks at her. "Quiet? Why?"

She shakes her head and shushes him again.

He glances around, taking in the rows of books, the vaulted ceiling, everything but her face which is growing more and more angry.

"Isn't this a place of knowledge? How is anyone supposed to learn anything if they can't ask questions?"

The girl hmphs! and flounces up from her chair, making quick tracks away from him back into the rows of books. Kaworu listens as her shoes click off into the distance. The book she was reading has been abandoned on the desk. With another shrug, Kaworu takes a seat in the chair she was using, picks up the book, and starts reading.
